Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms (such as viruses) that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The primary source of potential bloodborne pathogens is blood and specific bodily fluids. The goal is to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens by interrupting the way they are spread using infection control strategies. The primary way infections like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV are spread is through sexual contact or IV drug abuse.
