Bloodborne pathogens are spread by body fluids such as spinal fluid, synovial fluid around joints, peritoneal fluid in the abdomen, pericardial fluid around the heart, amniotic fluid, semen, urine, and feces. Infection can occur when a sharp object breaks a person’s skin and introduces a virus into the body, when a virus gets into a mucus membrane like the eyes or nose, or through a blood transfusion. The primary way infections like Hepatitis B, C, and HIV are spread is through sexual contact or IV drug abuse.
